October is Breast Cancer Awareness month and organizations throughout the country are donating their time, talents and other efforts to supporting not only the awareness of breast cancer, but also programs working on finding a cure. Whether it’s NFL players sporting hot pink shoes and pink gear on the field, pink lighting displays in our very own backyard or even the numerous Susan G. Komen Race for the Cure events happening across the nation, supporters everywhere are turning out to raise money in the fight against breast cancer.
Just last month, the South Dakota Affiliate of the Susan G. Komen Race for the Cure hosted the 4th annual Race for the Cure event in Vermillion, S.D. More than 3,500 race participants, supporters and volunteers came out to raise awareness and money to cure breast cancer. Seventy-five percent of all funds raised by the organization will go to breast cancer research, education, treatment programs and other breast health initiatives right here in South Dakota.
Because of the Susan G. Komen Foundation and other nationally recognized breast cancer initiatives around the country, breast cancer awareness month has seen major support not only from individuals, but also companies. Everyone from fashion designer Betsy Johnson to Yoplait to Tic Tac is lending their help to the cause.
Even the White House showed their support earlier this month by lighting the outer facade of the White House in bright pink lighting.*

With one in every eight women diagnosed with breast cancer, one can’t help but feel connected to the fight for a cure. This month as millions of individuals across the nation and countless organizations lend their support in the fight against breast cancer, what are you doing to fight breast cancer in your community? Here are some organizations to help get you started:
