It’s hard to say that the governor’s race is over in April, when the Republican primary won’t be held until June and the general election is way off in November. But the new Rasmussen polling numbers for South Dakota released today suggest the hill is getting steeper for the lone Democratic candidate, Senate minority leader Scott Heidepriem.

The latest head-to-head polling gives Lt. Gov. Dennis Daugaard a 53 percent to 33 percent advantage over Heidepriem. Daugaard is one of five Republicans seeking their party’s nomnation in the June 8 primary. The Rasmussen poll last month had the matchup 49-32 in favor of Daugaard over Heidepriem. In February the race was 41-32 in favor of Daugaard. That’s a 12-1 gain for Daugaard in three months while Heidepriem is stagnant. This might help explain why Heidepriem is spending money now on an advertising campaign despite not having a primary.
